Public service announcement forgets men.

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Listening to the radio here in Seattle, they had a service announcement provided by John L. Scott reality. About 41,000 women die each year from breast cancer. What they don’t say is about 500 men die from breast cancer or the 30,000 men who die from prostate cancer each year.

Breast cancer is a pet peeve of mine, as Men are not mentioned in breast cancer (Even if rare), and prostate cancer never receives the same level of attention in public announcements.

Should Men watch their wives give birth.

Monday, June 18th, 2007

There is an old 2005 opinion piece on Slate about a NY Times article, that I thought I’d post.

Quick summary, men watching their wives give birth and their reactions. Seems the “Joy of Birth” can be traumatizing to men, but men don’t speak about it. (Unwritten man law)

What shouldn’t phase me by now, is the personal attacks when men after the birth seek help with the trauma. One blogger wrote an entire article, “Would it hurt if I called you a Big Pussy?”. Even going on as far as calling men assholes who don’t want to be in the room.

Personally, I was there for my first 2 kids being born, even turned white and light headed. The doctor even had me cut the umbilical cord. I could easily see how some men could find nerve racking.
